How These Mods Work

Most AI NPC mods function by linking a character’s dialogue system to an external language model. When a player speaks or types a message, the model generates a contextual response that fits the character’s personality and current in-game situation. Some systems even include memory features, allowing NPCs to remember past conversations and reference earlier events.

In more advanced implementations, voice recognition and voice synthesis are added to the system. This allows players to speak directly to NPCs and receive spoken responses in return, creating a more natural conversational loop. In my view, modding communities are acting as early research labs for AI-driven game design. They are testing the boundaries of what AI-powered interaction feels like long before major studios fully commit to these systems.
